Tramadol – the best painkiller out there

Today Tramadol is available in dozens of brand and generic variations all over the world. Being the most commonly prescribed painkiller in the US under the brand name Ultram, and a very common choice for pain relief in Europe, Tramadol is certainly one of the most successful pain relief medications in the world. And there are different reasons for Tramadol to be so popular.

Developed in 1977 by German pharmaceutical company Grünenthal GmbH, Tramadol was quite a serious leap in pain relief methods compared to the drugs that were used up till then. Of course, Tramadol wasn't the first painkiller to be used in medicine. There were many substances available in pills, injections, lotions and other forms that provided a certain degree of pain management, some of them being even more potent than Tramadol. Drugs like morphine were already extensively used in hospitals for pain relief during surgeries and other procedures. Yet, the main problem with opiates and opioids, which most of the painkillers make part of, is that these substances seriously affect the central nervous system and lead to such unpleasant side effects as hallucinations, dementia, drowsiness, inability to concentrate and others.

Tramadol has instantly attracted the attention of many because while being a synthetic opioid it was almost free of the negative side effects its closest cousins have delivered on a regular basis. Yet, Tramadol had a similar mechanism of action – blocking specific receptors in the brain and making it unable to process nerve pain signals, without depressing the central nervous system to a serious extent. This was quite a successful innovation, because it allowed the drug to be used outside hospitals and clinics by people who really needed it.

Sure, there were other oral medications for pain relief available, the most popular of the being aspirin. Yet, they were all limited in their application. For example, aspirin is quite effective in relieving pain caused by inflammatory processes since it decreases inflammation in the body. However, in cases of chronic pain or neurological pain that isn't due to inflammation, aspirin is pretty much useless. Tramadol, on the other hand was able to address virtually any kind of pain with similar effectiveness because it didn't affect the source of pain but rather the organ processing it – the brain.

Decades later after its introduction and with numerous contemporary medications out there on the market, Tramadol remains to be one of the most demanded painkiller medication in the world. And it's a clear evidence that this medication is by far the most successful painkiller available on the market.

About Tramadol

Tramadol is one of the most commonly prescribed analgesics in the US and there are several good reasons for this. First of all, Tramadol effectively eliminates virtually any type of pain regardless of its cause. Tramadol is also safe to take and usually doesn't cause drowsiness, lack of concentration or other unpleasant side effects common with other potent painkillers. It is used for managing moderate to severe acute pain, but it also may be used for chronic pain relief in its extended release form.
